Music really is amazing.
When words fail, music speaks. The right song can bring you out of a bad mood. It can help you find clarity. Hearing that someone else has felt your pain, has lived through the same struggles, it can remind you that you aren’t alone.
I love finding new music to listen to, so I thought I’d share some that’s really speaking to me at the moment.
IMAGINE DRAGONS- ORIGINS
This album was just released this week. Imagine Dragons is one of my all time favorite groups. I almost got to see them at Walnut Creek, but ended up not being able to cause of stupid health.
Okay, back to this INCREDIBLE ALBUM. Their music has always been really honest, but a few of the songs on this record are almost brutal in honesty. Which is so amazing, that an artist or band can show such vulnerability. The only song I could do without is “Zero” which was written for the movie Ralph Breaks The Internet.
A few of my favorites include Machine, Bad Liar, Burn Out, and West Coast. Machine sounds like it belongs in a dystopian movie. I actually pictured one of my characters listening to it as I heard it, especially since its dystopian and my characters deal with mental health issues. Bad Liar is one of the brutally honest songs. He wrote the song with Aja Volkman, who was his wife. The first line “hush my dear it’s been a difficult year” sets the tone. Burn Out to me is a bit hopeful, and West Coast could pass for a Lumineers song.
KODALINE- POLITICS OF LIVING
I love this album. These guys don’t get enough credit. It’s just an amazing record. I ugly cried when I first heard “Shed A Tear”, and then ugly cried some more for “I Wouldn’t Be” and “Brother”. Those songs are beautiful. “Shed A Tear” talks about those people who are with you through thick and thin, and who feel what you are feeling. “I Wouldn’t Be” is an acapella about how you’re family shapes who you grow to be. At the end there is a bagpipe solo, showing their Irish background and how that affects you as well. And “Brother” talks about how you got someone’s back. The lyrics in the chorus “If I was dying on my knees, you would be the one to rescue me, and if you were lost at sea, I’d give you my love so you can breathe” really drive the point home. Plus the upbeat songs on the record are amazing.
OASIS- DONT LOOK BACK IN ANGER
This is probably my favorite song by Oasis. It makes you think a bit, and is actually hopeful if you listen and think on it. Of course the song is impossible on guitar, but I love the ending riff. My favorite lyric is “so I’ll start a revolution from my bed, cause you say the brains I had went to my head.”
CATHERINE MCGRATH- TALK OF THIS TOWN
I love country music. I think that country music is one of the things that made me want to write songs. I always appreciate a good storyteller, and I love music that just makes you feel good. This album Has both. She’s an Irish country singer. My favorite song is probably still “Lost In The Middle”.
MIRANDA LAMBERT- FAMOUS IN A SMALL TOWN
This song makes me laugh, especially since all I can think about is poor Loralai Gilmore in Stars Hollow. Everybody does die famous in a small town.
KEITH URBAN- FEMALE
Such an empowering song. I think it’s amazing that he released this song, because normally this would be sung by a woman. But he shows that men do appreciate a strong female. There are so many amazing lines, but my favorite is still “when somebody laughs and implies she asked for it, just cause she was wearing a skirt, oh is that how that works?”
TAYLOR SWIFT- NEW ROMANTICS AND THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS
New Romantics pretty much sums up how I feel about my life. It’s such a cool song, and the lyrics are clever. I love that the bass line isn’t super basic. I always dance to this one, and it always brings me out of a bad mood.
Of course, so does This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things. From the hilarious lyrics, to the fact she calls someone “shady”, and the cackle at the end of the bridge, there’s no way you can’t feel better after hearing it.
So those are a few of the songs and albums that I have on repeat. Each of them speak to me in a different way, and i love that music isn’t always one dimensional. I’d love to hear what music is currently on your playlist. Let me know in the comments- I’m always looking for good recommendations!
Until next time 🙂
